About FIRST
D.A.R.T., the Guntersville High School robotics team, is part of FIRST. FIRST stands for For Inspirstion And Recognition For Science And Technology. FIRST Robotics Competition challenges teams of students and their mentors to solve a common problem in a six-week time frame using a standard “kit of parts” and a common set of rules. Teams build robots from the parts and enter them in a series of competitions designed by Dean Kamen and Woodie Flowers. In 2008, over 1,300 teams will compete in 38 regional events. FIRST teams come from Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, Israel, Mexico, the U.K. and almost every U.S. state.
FIRST redesigns winning for these students. Teams are rewarded for excellence in design, demonstration, gracious professionalism, maturity, and ability to overcome obstacles. Scoring the most points is a secondary goal. Winning means building partnerships that last.
